Sydney has woken to a heavy blanket of fog on Monday morning, with visibility dramatically reduced across the city and disruptions reported at Sydney Airport and on major roads.

The fog has partially obscured the city skyline, with only the tops of skyscrapers peeking through the haze.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is also barely visible beneath the thick cover.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the fog is brought on by cool overnight temperatures and high humidity and is not uncommon for this time of year.

Premier Chris Minns thanked commuters for their patience, describing the scene as striking.

“I’ve never seen fog like that, or certainly not for a long time. It made for some pretty dramatic views,” he said on 2GB.

“But I think people are pretty understanding when the fog closes in — safety is first, hopefully it doesn’t knock too many days out.”

Ferries were cancelled due to poor visibility, but resumed at about 8.40am.

Sydney Ferries issued a warning on X at 7.30am: “No Sydney ferries are running at all due to the heavy fog.

“Make alternative travel arrangements.”

Flight operations at Sydney Airport have been affected, with incoming planes facing delays of around five minutes, while outbound flights are experiencing delays averaging 11 minutes.

Sydney Harbour was cloaked in a thick fog on Monday morning, with the Harbour Bridge barely recognisable behind the haze.

Ferry wharves along the shoreline faded into the mist, while joggers running beneath the bridge quickly disappeared into the low-lying cloud.

Road users across Sydney are being urged to drive with caution, with the Bureau of Meteorology issuing a Road Weather Alert for all suburbs.

“Reduced visibility in fog will make road conditions dangerous during Monday in all suburbs,” the alert reads.

“Motorists are advised to take extreme care.”

The fog is heaviest in Sydney’s north and northwest but the haze has also been affecting motorists coming into the city from the south and west.

The Bureau forecasts a maximum temperature of 19C for Sydney today, with partly cloudy conditions and only a slight chance of rain.

Light winds are expected, and the fog is likely to lift later in the morning.

Patchy fog remains most prominent in the city’s western suburbs, but commuters across the metro area are being warned to allow extra travel time and keep headlights on when driving in low-visibility conditions.
