Miss Sina bakery at Marrickville is fighting to renew its lease and keep its popular vegan cafe open after receiving an eviction notice from the landlord.
Spouses and co-owners Jacques Dumont and Sina Klug have taken landlord Magarita Constanti Salamakis to the NSW Supreme Court in a civil case after claiming they did not breach their lease and had paid their rent.
An extended caveat was lodged in the court on Tuesday that protects any landlord dealings with the title to the premises on 132 Illawarra Rd, where Miss Sina continues to operate.
Barrister Doran Cook told Judge Geoff Lindsay his clients hoped an agreement with Salamakis could be reached before the next court date on June 24 in an effort to avoid litigation.
“We just want to get on with baking, your Honour,’’ Mr Cook said.
“It’s a small business.’’
Since announcing the eviction notice on GoFundMe, Miss Sina has almost reached the halfway mark of its $50,000 target to cover legal fees.
The shop has been open since September 2022 and quickly grew a fine reputation for producing impressive vegan sweets.
Online, Ms Klug describes the business as “our home” and “dream”.
GoFundMe fundraiser and customer Tom Koski described the business as part of the fabric of Marrickville.
“Owners Sina and Jacques repeatedly show up for the community and now it’s our turn to show up for them,’’ he said.
“How do they help the community? In more ways than they give themselves credit for – fundraisers, dog rescue, classes for the community, book nights, sensory friendly activities, donating food to the less fortunate and more.’’
Despite being less than three years old, Miss Sina has already gained a loyal fan base with customers happy to queue out the door to snap up its many plant-based goods including croissants, cinnamon scrolls and cakes.
