A young gifted sports star who was tragically found dead at Erina Creek has been remembered as “the kindest soul to walk the earth” in a heart-wrenching tribute.
Audrey Griffin, 19, was found dead and partially submerged in a Central Coast creek after a night out with friends. She was last seen about 2am on March 23 at Gosford Hotel.
A member of the Terrigal Surf Life Saving Club, Terrigal Sharks Rugby League Club and former vice-captain of Central Coast Sports College, Ms Griffin was known as a fit, talented and highly motivated young woman with the world at her feet.
A GoFundMe page set up to support Audrey’s family said the community was “heartbroken by the unexpected loss of our beautiful Audrey.”
“Audrey touched everyone, not just in her community but all over the country. She was the light in many of our lives,” the tribute said.
“There is no doubt she brought endless laughter and joy to everyone. She was the kindest soul to walk this earth and will always be in our hearts.”
So far the page has raised $25,800 with the proceeds set to cover funeral costs.
On Instagram, the Terrigal Sharks said they were “devastated” with the sudden loss of Audrey Griffin.
“Audrey was a valuable member of both the junior and senior Terrigal Sharks family,” they said.
“Audrey was a member of the inaugural women’s under 17‘s grand final winning team and the inaugural Terrigal sharks Senior women’s team.
“With a larger-than-life personality, and happy go lucky nature, Audrey would hit with sting then check that they were okay, and then skip to each of the scrums.
“Audrey will be sorely missed by the Sharks family, may she rest in peace.
“What a pleasure it was to have you a part of our club and our lives. You will forever be missed and us girls will forever skip to scrums for you”.
Having graduated high school in 2023, Ms Griffin was juggling training, part-time work at Crown Plaza Terrigal with tertiary studies at the University of Technology Sydney.
Two weeks earlier she had completed the gruelling ANZCO New Zealand half Ironman in a time of 06:40:32, placing her 194 out of 295 female competitors in the international event.
Preliminary results suggest the cause of death was drowning – but that, and the exact cause of death, will be determined by a Coroner.
