The 35-year-old former Member for Pittwater, on Sydney’s northern beaches, turned briefly to bartending to make ends meet while he fights child sex charges.

He was working at Traders Bar at the revamped Hay Street Market on Thursday, the day after it officially opened to the public, wearing a baseball cap and collared shirt as he greeted customers, made transactions and served drinks.

But Amon’s new gig did not last long, with a Hay Street Market spokesman telling The Daily Telegraph the company had been “made aware of issues surrounding a casual employee on Thursday”.

“The employee in question has ceased working with (the) company,” the spokesman said.

He was spotted just a day after fronting the Downing Centre District Court and making an unsuccessful bid to be allowed to move to Potts Point, where his lawyer said he could remain “more anonymous”.

In an affidavit tendered to the court, solicitor Lauren MacDougall said after Amon’s arrest his Narrabeen home and that of his parents, who live in the same street, had been broadcast on national television and he had received threats and abuse on his social media pages.

“Accordingly, the applicant does not feel safe or comfortable engaging in employment or in the broader community generally in the Northern Beaches area,” she wrote.

“The applicant has social connections in and around the city and, given the density, has found that it provides an ability to go about life in a more anonymous way.”

The $20m Hay Street Market complex, operated by Doltone Hospitality Group and featuring nearly 50 stalls, opened to the public on Wednesday.

Earlier that day, The Daily Telegraph revealed prosecutors will allege Amon met his alleged victim on a gay hook-up app called Squirt.org when the boy was 13.

They allege Amon lied about his age and claimed to be 17.

Amon has pleaded not guilty to all charges, which relate to contact with the teenager on two occasions in 2017 when Amon was a Northern Beaches councillor.

Court documents detailing the prosecution’s case, released despite opposition from Amon’s lawyers, allege Amon and the underage complainant exchanged explicit images and videos of themselves on instant messaging platform Snapchat before meeting in person at the alleged victim’s house.

Amon is alleged to have driven to the boy’s address and suggested the pair “go somewhere private” before relocating to a bathroom stall, where Amon is accused of placing the boy’s hand on his penis before the complainant performed oral sex on the older man.

Police allege the second incident was similar to the first, taking place in the same bathroom. Amon is alleged to have also performed oral sex on the teen before attempting to have anal sex with the boy, who reported “remembering it hurting a lot”.

Amon was arrested and charged in August 2024 following an investigation by police under Strike Force Nooral, which was established the same month he was elected to state parliament.

The now former Pittwater MP resigned immediately upon the request of Opposition leader Mark Speakman after the allegations came to light, sparking a by-election in which the Coalition lost the seat to independent MP Jacqui Scruby.

Amon was seen working at one of the bars in the new Hay St Market until 11pm on Thursday night, and appeared to be continuously checking his mobile phone. It’s understood he was advised after his shift there was no future work available.
