Dominic Perrottet gave Chris Minns advice in post-election chat

After an election lauded for its civility, Dominic Perrottet sat down with Chris Minns for a candid two-hour meeting the day before his successor is to be sworn in.

NSW Labor’s win is only a ‘scrape over the line’

Outgoing Premier Dominic Perrottet sat down with the man that took his job for 90 minutes yesterday to officially hand over the reins of the state.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal that the handover from Mr Perrottet to incoming Premier Chris Minns went more than an hour longer than scheduled, in a sign that there are no hard feelings between the two men who have spent the past months slogging it out in a hard-fought election battle.

The convivial meeting between the two men who both wanted to lead NSW makes good on Mr Minns’ pledge to seek advice from Mr Perrottet where he can.

It also indicates that Mr Perrottet wants to give the new government every chance to succeed.

Mr Minns told the Telegraph that he will continue to seek advice from his predecessor.

“I look forward to calling on Mr Perrottet in the future for his advice and perspective on policy matters,” Mr Minns said on Monday.

“I do think it’s important that that corporate knowledge can transcend partisan divides, it’s good for the state and the people of NSW.”

Mr Minns will officially be sworn in as Premier today, along with his key leadership group.

Incoming Treasurer Daniel Mookhey yesterday praised Mr Perrottet for the way he has handled the transition.

“I would just again reiterate my appreciation for Dominic Perrottet as Premier for the gracious way in which he’s handling this transition,” Mr Mookhey said.

When conceding defeat on Saturday night, Mr Perrottet praised Mr Minns for the way he fought the campaign.

On Saturday, the former Premier called the election fight a “race to the top” and a “genuine battle of ideas”.

“In many ways, that is due to Chris Minns and the way he has carried himself throughout this campaign,” Mr Perrottet said on Saturday.

“I believe that he will lead with the same decency and the same integrity he has led with so far.”

Mr Minns told the Telegraph on Sunday that he had a “very high regard” for Mr Perrottet.

“I wouldn’t hesitate to ring him up and ask for advice, wouldn’t hesitate in the slightest, even if he’s still in parliament,” Mr Minns said.

“That doesn’t mean I’m going to take it, and it doesn’t mean the advice he gives me will be consistent with Labor values, but why not? I think that the state could benefit from that kind of dialogue.”

“The two of us have shown that we can run election campaigns without being spiteful or personality based.”

Mr Minns indicated he may seek advice on “personnel in government or the best way to run a cabinet”.
