An ambitious redevelopment plan for Tresco, one of Sydney’s most expensive waterfront trophy homes, has been refused by City of Sydney council.

It had sparked opposition among the Elizabeth Bay neighbours who are currently anxious about the property being the set location for the night-time filming of The Golden Bachelor.

The $22.7m redevelopment project for the sprawling 3300sq m waterfront estate with its 1860s mansion was lodged by Janette Waterhouse, the former wife of art dealer David Waterhouse, the son of late bookmaking legend Bill Waterhouse.

The property was last sold in 2004 when the oncology nurse bought the site for $14m.

However the submitted Tonkin Zulaikha Greer architectural plans indicated their clients were both Janette and David.

Veteran fashion industry operative Grant Pearce was among neighbours who submitted concerns about the redevelopment noting views from his apartment would have been affected were permission be given for the construction of a fifth floor, with a rooftop garden.

“I believe that this addition will continue to block our current view of the water, which we highly value,” his objection advised.

“Additionally, by adding a rooftop garden, there is the concern that they may plant tall trees or add other items that could further obstruct our view in the future”

The development plan lodged last June would have involved excavating and subdividing waterfront sections of the block to create the two new homes was refused last month.
