The economic and environmental sustainability of Palmerston are the primary goals of the newly re-elected mayor Athina Pascoe-Bell as she looks towards her second term heading council.

It was a landslide win according to the NT Electoral Commission with latest figures showing Pascoe-Bell sweeping up 10,550 first preference votes of the 14,238 votes counted in Palmerston.

Neither of opponents have crossed 2500 preference votes proving the faith the Palmerston people have in their incumbent mayor who suggests there’s a lot to look forward to.

“It is exciting to be giving this opportunity for another term,” she said.

“You don’t often have the opportunity to take hold of an organisation and have it shaped in the way you envisage it needs to be done to the benefit of the community.

“There is a lot of work that the current council has done in preparing for these next few years so it will be good to see these plans come into fruition.

“There is quite a lot to look forward to and hopefully other members of council support those ongoing projects and hopefully the new members bring some fresh ideas.”

Still to come is the revitalisation of the Palmerston Swimming Pool, a new community centre in Zuccoli and the continued building of the Grey Community Hall.

There are also plenty of actions to be enacted from the newly launched Palmerston Local Economic Plan with council exploring ways to promote Palmerston as a destination for business and industry development.

And for Pascoe-Bell it’s that continued development that she hopes will make Palmerston an even better place for people to live and work.

“If people are happy to live in Palmerston they will want to stay and that ability to retain and attract new residents will help drive our economy as well,” she said.

“The local economic plan looks at what we can do to facilitate economic development of growth and industry in the Palmerston area.

“Over the next 12 to 18 months there will be a lot of actions from that plan that council will need to get on top of.

“But overall I would like to see Palmerston become financially and environmentally sustainable with a really strong economy driving our community.”
