Qantas’ newest next generation aircraft is set to touch down in Darwin next year providing Territorians a new international option.

The Airbus A220 will touch down in the Top End on January 27, 2025, operating flights to Melbourne and Singapore.

The new aircraft will provide routes to and from the Victorian capital daily, while its Darwin venture will also mark its international debut from March 30.

From April until late 2025, Qantas will also add an additional return flight between Melbourne and Darwin operated by a Boeing 737 up to four times per week, adding more than 35,000 seats.

Meanwhile, subject to government and regulatory approval, from March 30 the 137-seat A220 will provide five weekly flights between Darwin and Singapore, meaning there will be an additional 2800 seats between the two cities each year.

The A220 is larger than the Embraer E190 which was originally planned to launch the new route.

The route will be the fastest way for Territorians to travel to London with a seamless connection onto QF1 in Singapore, and to other European destinations with partner airlines.

The Northern Territory A220 flights are on sale today and can be booked on qantas.com or via travel agents.

Qantas International chief executive Cam Wallace said the carrier was excited to bring the next generation aircraft to the Top End.

“Feedback from customers about the A220 has been fantastic and we’re excited to be bringing it to Darwin for the first time next year,” Mr Wallace said.

“The A220 is a next generation aircraft that offers more comfortable seats, fast and free Wi-Fi, and the largest windows of any single aisle aircraft.

“Darwin to Singapore will be the first international A220 route for Qantas and, with onward connections, will open up the fastest route for Territorians to travel to London.

“It will also become the gateway for tourists to visit the iconic Top End.”

QantasLink has taken delivery of the first four of 29 A220 jet aircraft, which are steadily replacing its long-serving fleet of Boeing 717s as part of the Qantas Group’s fleet renewal program.

The new aircraft is significantly more fuel efficient, with a light and bright cabin design, large windows and overhead lockers.

It also has fast free Wi-Fi available on domestic flights, specially designed seats and greater sense of space, with the flights to Singapore also having free Wi-Fi by the end of 2025.
