Timber Creek hit and run

UPDATE, MAY 23: A MAN has been arrested after a 19-year-old was killed in a hit and run west of Timber Creek last month.

The 50-year-old was arrested by Major Crash detectives in Alice Springs, with a number of search warrants executed.

He is being interviewed in relation to the death of the young man who passed away on the Victoria Hwy on Friday, April 22.

Police are expected to charge him with fatal hit and run cause of death.

In April, police released CCTV footage of a suspected vehicle, in the hopes of receiving public assistance.

Detective Sergeant Jeshua Kelly was grateful for the people who had came forward with information.

“We’d like to thank the public for their assistance in identifying the vehicle, which led to the driver also being identified,” he said.

UPDATE 5PM FRIDAY: A FAMILY who lost a son, a brother at the cusp of his adult life are searching for answers after a fatal hit and run on an empty stretch of highway.

NT Police are still calling for answers after a 19-year-old passed away on the Victoria Highway following a hit-and-run crash near Timber Creek on Friday April 22.

Major Crash Investigation Unit Detective Sargent Joshua Kelly said police were releasing new footage in their ongoing quest to give the teenager’s family some answers.

“As you can imagine (his family) they’re absolutely devastated. They’re lost a son lost a brother. His small tight knit community is really grieving at the moment,”

“As you can imagine they just really expressed their strong desire to see this driver identified, and brought to justice.”

Sgt Kelly said Territory police are coordinating with colleagues across the WA border, as it was suspected that they may have been campers who possibly were headed interstate.

“Hit and runs are always our trickiest investigations, and this one is obviously made much more difficult considering the remote locality of where it’s taken place,” he said.

“Doesn’t mean we’re not giving it our best shot at tracking down this crime.”

Sgt Kelly said police were released additional CCTV footage from a Greyhound bus travelling east towards Timber Creek, and were calling for any potential witnesses or those with other footage of the highway to come forward.

Sgt Kelly said the footage from the Greyhound Bus, which showed a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction matched up with the timeline for the crash.

“We’re not certain if this vehicle is even involved in the collision,” he said.

“It’s certainly possible that person was driving through, but either way we would love to speak to whoever was driving that vehicle.”

It comes two days after police released grainy CCTV stills of two vehicles of interest travelling down the highway.

Sgt Kelly said police had ruled out one of the suspected vehicles, which passed by the Timber Creek Hotel at 1.40pm, but were still searching for a second driver who passed by an hour later.

The Major Crash Investigator ended his call for information with a direct appeal to the mystery driver.

“If you’re the one who was involved in this crash. Come forward. It’s not too late to do the right thing. Regardless, we’re going to be continuing our search.”
