A couple of southerners say they’ve picked up a few new ideas at the annual Alice Springs show – and they’re going to take them back to South Australia to make their town’s show better.
The 66th Alice Springs show kicked off on Friday, with thousands coming through the gates on the first day.
Central Australian Show Society president Andrew Barrett said the show was a day where “town and country come together”.
“This year’s show is a proud celebration of everything that makes Central Australia unique, from a pastoral heritage and agricultural excellence to the creativity, resilience and spirit of our local community,” he said.
Among the attendees was Sami Skoljarev, the president of the Port Lincoln Show, who said he’s picked a up a few new ideas he’s planning to take with him to South Australia.
The pavilions exhibiting the talent of Alice Springs was something Mr Skoljarev said was a great idea, and is something he’d like to implement in Port Lincoln at the next show.
Joining him was show treasurer Peter Hughes, who said the Alice Springs show had a good set up.
Also at the show was Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro, who proudly flaunted she’d come with a whole entourage of CLP Ministers and backbenchers – many of whom had Top End based electorates.
Alice Springs-based helicopter pilots Julia Abra and Callum Scott said this was their first show since moving into town last year.
The duo loved the “sense of community” at the show and said it was great to see everyone having a go at the different competitions within the show.
Within the pavilion, residents had put forward their best cakes, artworks, veggies and more, the best of which received top honours from judges at the show.
But for Nareene Tipene, her favourite was the rides, and she was eyeing off this year’s newest edition: the slingshot ride.
She said she was impressed with this year selection of rides, and couldn’t wait to give them a go.
