The Nightcliff Tigers burst out of the blocks early to set the tone in a big win against an in form Wanderers and ensure they go into the break in the NTFL top three.
Wanderers came in with plenty of wind in their sails with three wins from their past four, including a defeat of reigning premiers St Mary’s.
But the Tigers caught them by surprise in the early stages and except for a third quarter fightback they had control for the entirety of what ended as a 11.12 (78) to 4.7 (31) victory.
Nightcliff were on track for a truly comprehensive win in the first quarter as their quality shone against a Wanderers side that were unable to get a single score for the term.
Sean Hunter blasted an early stunner on the run to start the goal scoring for the Tigers and they kicked on from there, reminiscent of the side’s quick start against Tiwi in Round 9.
The Tigers crowded each contest with numbers and despite the best efforts of Wanderers players it was all one way momentum for the Tigers early on.
Skipper Brodie Filo was the creator of plenty of the early moments with his strong disposal, while Kye Declase offered himself up forward and was well rewarded for those efforts.
Wanderers didn’t get into the scoring until late in the second quarter when Tyson Whyte went for a behind, but it was a sign of more to come as Dray Thompson nailed a stunning major shortly after.
The momentum carried into the third quarter where the consistent efforts of Cody Leggett and Davin Ferreira were rewarded with points and for a time a comeback looked possible.
However, Nightcliff snapped back in part due with Jonathon Lanyon doing a shift down back while Marly MacGregor was a force who always made an impact on the board.
Former Hawthorn and Bulldogs player Fergus Greene was another to have an influence and he was integral assisting his forward line helping Declase on his way to a goal in each quarter.
“We’re really pumped, we wanted to finish out the year pretty strong,” Declase said.
“We knew they would come out pretty hot and heavy because they’re coming off a big win, but we wanted to get the jump on them early and we did that.
“That’s our recent game plan, come out strong and start really well, if we can do that we give ourselves a really strong chance of winning the game.
“We played a little into their hands in the third quarter with scrappy footy and going away from our plan, but we slowed it down in the last and played the way we like to play.”

PREVIEW
Wanderers have conjured visions of a return to the NTFL finals with their recent run of form but a pre-break showdown with the top-three Tigers could bring those hopes unstuck.
The NT News and KommunityTV will stream every moment of the Round 11 clash from 7pm on Saturday.
The Muk Muks delivered on all their promise last round in a boilover victory against reigning premiers St Mary’s, and are now knocking on the door of the top five.
Billy Crofts and Cody Leggett have been inspired recruitments, and there are plenty of others filling the Wanderers list that are clicking at what just might be the perfect time.
They now have momentum with three wins from their past four, and they need to keep building if they’re to play finals this season.
But the Tigers, who delivered an 83-point hammer blow to Wanderers earlier this season, are coming into the contest in a similarly rich vein of form.
The Tigers are one game clear in the Premier League top three after a dominant win over Tiwi last week, and will be determined to maintain that spot heading into Christmas.
Brandan Parfitt returned to the fold last round and put his experience to work from the outset, while Jonathan Lanyon and Brodie Filo are always ball winning threats.
It’s currently advantage to the Tigers, but this wave of Wanderers momentum it could very easily go the other way.
