Wanderers’ finals ambitions are alive and well after beating one of their major rivals and last year’s premiers St Mary’s. Watch the full match REPLAY.

Replay: Wanderers v St Mary's - 2024-25 NTFL Round 10

Wanderers have kept their hopes of returning to finals footy alive with a stunning defeat of reigning premiers St Mary’s.

It was a win the Muk Muks desperately needed with the gap to the top five growing and against their old rivals, who were tied for top spot, it looked like an uphill battle.

But befitting their recent form, Wanderers took the early lead and never lost it in a showing full of effort to win 10.10 (70) to 8.6 (54).

Saints’ issues were apparent pre-game when their skipper and two-time Nichols medal winner, Dylan Landt, was out with injury, with Connor West and Will Robinson off the sheet, too.

Then Wanderers came with a quick wave of clearances out the middle, led by the work rate of Cody Leggett, Jack Sinclair and Billy Crofts, that paid off in early goals.

Saints fought their way back into the contest with Kieren Parnell belting the ball forward, and a Beau Tedcastle snap to get on the board.

But every time the Green Machine came, the Muk Muks had the answers.

The backline was steadfast and shut down Jackson Calder, who still scored three, and Jack Landt in the contest.

Wanderers skipper Mitchel Taylor led the defence and the likes of Lachlan P Hourigan, Dylan Dos Santos and Riley Calvene all played valuable shut down and rebound roles.

The pressure came to play further forward too allowing Wanderers to win free kicks at crucial times and snap any momentum in the Saints attack.

Leggett and Crofts continued to have a say on matters throughout the contest, as Tyson Whyte and Jak Trewin presented themselves to score the late necessary goals in the slippy conditions.

Without their key players Saints lacked the fight back that earned them wins against Tiwi and Districts in the past month.

Instead Wanderers were able to see out the clock in the dying moments having done their bit to win the contested and game when it mattered.

“We’ve been really good over the past month so to get this against a really good side gives us belief that we can be a top five side,” Leggett said.

“We’ve got such a good group and it’s a great club, we’re building a really good core group and even with a few late chances we just soldiered on and got the job done.

“It was pretty wet and slippery and on those days whoever cracks in and wants the win most while putting the intensity into getting the contested ball normally wins.

“Our midfield and backline groups, as well as our forwards when needed, did that and showed we wanted to win more.

“We’ve just got to keep bringing the effort as we have been, we’re not outcome focused we’re focused on doing what we need in the contest and the win will come.”

PREVIEW

St Mary’s may be flying high, but old rivals Wanderers po se a serious threat on the back of some strong form.

The NT News and KommunityTV will stream every moment of this clash from 7pm on Friday.

The Green Machine have won their past five matches, including over table toppers Southern Districts, leaving just percentage between them and the top spot.

The Green Machine line-up has certainly benefitted from the inclusion of former West Coast Eagles player Connor West, who was a standout in last weekend’s huge win over the Buffaloes.

Their pressure game has been outstanding this season, as has their ability to fight back from losing positions to claim victory.

Wanderers have also shown plenty of fight this season, particularly in their last-minute defeat of PINT two rounds ago and with the strong outing against Waratah last weekend.

There will be concerns after their skipper, Mitchel Taylor, didn’t return at halftime, but there’s plenty starting to click into place for this side.

In their last meeting back in early November, the Saints came away with a 13.14 (92) to 5.8 (38) win in a scrappy match, but both sides have only improved in the four rounds since.
