St Mary’s have impressively put an end to Southern Districts’ unbeaten start to the season, surging late to make the Crocs pay the ultimate price for some wayward kicking.
The top of the table clash between the previously undefeated Crocs and premiers Saints lived up to all expectations in terms of excitement and spectacle.
Districts took control early on and for some time it looked as if they would dominate, but the Saints grind and pressure game allowed the side to stick it out and make a late charge against tired legs.
As has become a custom skipper Dylan Landt was integral to the outfit’s second half lift and it was his goal that put the side ahead on the way to their 10.3 (63) to 7.13 (55) win.
Districts quickly took a handle of the game as the better side on the spread and plenty of their best players back in the outfit.
Wyatt Ryan had the obvious ascendency in the ruck battle, despite Saints Will Robinson chopping in at an uncommon role, while Jarrod Brander was the big marker in the forward line.
Those early efforts were the inspiration for a run of goals from Will Farrer and Josiah Farrer that quickly put Saints in the rear view on the scoreboard, as a four goal opening quarter.
But the St Mary’s defence regrouped and restricted the competition’s highest scorers to just 3.11 for the rest of the game.
Districts were their own worst enemies at times whether it was hitting the posts when game breaking goals looked likely or giving away free kicks to give Saints a lifeline.
Their most disastrous incident was consecutive 50m’s given away by the Roy George that brought Chad Harris all the way up the field from the back flank to the goal square.
Still it was Crocs who had the upper hand and brought the fire with Jed Anderson winning the key battles while Jack Sexton, Jack McQueen and Beau Schwarze threw themselves at everything.
However, as Saints are known for their small forwards and overall presume game came to the fore in the back half of the contest and where matters were hard earlier points started to flow.
Skipper Dylan Landt brought the impetuous from the middle while Joel Garner showed plenty of aggression alongside Connor West as their side found their way on top.
The route to Calder opened up and he struck, but it was a final quarter effort from Jack Landt and then a supreme goal from Dylan Landt that put them ahead.
From there the smalls got to work continuing to wreak havoc whether it was Xavier Vallejo through the middle or some explosive scores from Beau Tedcastle to seal the deal.
Districts had their own chances late to salvage the game, but wayward kicking and a loosening of their dominance through the middle had them falter to their foes.
“It was unbelievable, they’re obviously a great side and we knew we had a tough fight coming but they just grinded it out,” former West Coast Eagle West said.
“We just stuck to our strengths and were lucky enough to run over the top of them in the end, everyone played their role and we got the job done.
“We had some big ins and they all bring their strengths and with it being early days still hopefully we can build the chemistry and build to where we need to be in the post-Christmas break.
“In a game like this one is shows St Mary’s just have this style of footy that means we’re never out of it, we just keep grinding and backing each other, even when they has us we stuck to our guns.
“I’m loving being here, it’s different to back home but I’m enjoying my time with this club, they’ve been super welcoming and even though I’m only new it’s as if I’ve been here a couple of years.”

PREVIEW
This top-of-the-table NTFL battle between Southern Districts and St Mary’s is about as pivotal as it gets.
It may only be Round 8 but a win for the unbeaten Crocs would make for some uncomfortable viewing for the chasing pack.
The NT News and KommunityTV will stream every moment of this clash from 6pm on Saturday.
It’s six out of six for the high flying leaders so far and another win over a Saints side who look their most likely minor premiership challengers, would certainly be some statement of intent.
With matches against last year’s grand final sides in consecutive weeks, Districts will be out to finish the first round of matches in style.
The Crocs are full of in-form players and, fresh off the bye, they might somehow be even more dangerous.
Matt Shannon and Jed Anderson have been dominating possession through the middle and scoring plenty, while Wyatt Ryan has been the best ruck of the season to date.
Saints have their own powerhouse in skipper Dylan Landt, who is topping the possession count virtually every week.
The Green Machine are a side that know how to win, as proven in their come-from-behind defeat of the Tiwi Bombers two weeks ago.
Maintaining that edge and hoping Jackson Calder gets among the goals will be key if they are to topple the leaders.
Watch the full replay at the end of the game.
