Wanderers have kept their finals ambitions alive surviving tough post-storm conditions to come out the slightly better side against PINT.

A win was crucial for both sides’ finals ambitions as a loss would put them a further game out of touch with the top five.

Points were hard to come by throughout the entire match, but with less than 30 seconds left on the clock, Jack Sinclair booted a goal to give Wanderers a 7.3 (45) to 6.5 (41) win.

Wanderers got the early drop on their opposition, as they’ve become prone to doing with an early flurry of possessions coming out of the middle

The match had to be paused momentarily for a dog pitch invasion during the second quarter, which Wanderers skipper Mitchel Taylor swiftly dealt with by carrying it into the arms of a runner.

It wasn’t the only matter the reliable defender took care of during the match as he was once again the rock in defence the Muk Muks have come to know him for.

PINT though found their way through the efforts of Connor McDonald from the ruck and the likes of Cameron Wilson and Thomas Miller managed to push the ball on in sloppy conditions.

Chris Nield and Benjamin Brett were the accurate men up forward for the Greenants and ensured the game stayed close on the board.

The question mark on Wanderers was how they would perform in the second half having dropped off in that period in their recent rounds against both Nightcliff and Buffaloes.

The answer was positively.

A Murray Waite snap goal following a great leaping mark put the Wanderers ahead once more before Jak Trewin, a standout recruit for Wanderers this season, made it a two-goal advantage after some clever play out the middle.

A succession of free kicks then went against Wanderers in the tricky conditions and some composure from PINT allowed them to claw back the deficit.

It was the boot of Nield that once more sent his side ahead, kicking the first and what for a long while appeared to be the only goal of the final period.

Defences took hold and it seemed as if another goal wouldn’t come until it came to Sinclair on the sideline, who despite the pressure struck true to take the win.

“I was real nervous about it, I’ve never been in a situation like that before and being a lefty offered myself up for the ping, but it was a real good team effort to get that win,” Sinclair said.

“We’ve been working super hard at training, the boys always give it a crack and while we’ve had those second half fade outs that we know we need to fix we have plenty of trust in our guys.

“We’re a young group with so many new faces so we’re just working as hard as we can in training and that work is starting to show.

“A win like that is huge and gives the whole footy club plenty of confidence, I wasn’t here last year but know it was tough so to get these early wins in shows we’re building something.

“I came up here to challenge myself and I’m loving it, the conditions out there for this one were more what I’m used to with the wet and mud, but otherwise it’s been about handling the heat.”

This is looming as a game neither team can really afford to lose.

Already two games behind fifth place Tiwi Bombers, both PINT and Wanderers risk further finals alienation if beaten.

Wanderers pulled off their second win of the season after holding out a fast-finishing Darwin Buffaloes outfit last round, but will need more than that to achieve their third.

The Muk Muks have struggled to maintain promising starts into the second half, scoring just one point against Nightcliff, while their lead against the Buffaloes also faded late.

Jaxon East, who missed the Buffs game, has been among their more consistent performers, while their defence, led by Mitchel Taylor, was their strong suit against the Double Blues.
