“The driver swerved to avoid the collision however was unable to (avoid) the female,” he said.

He said the woman was stabilised on-site before being taken to Royal Darwin Hospital for further treatment.

200+ litres of drug seized in smuggling busts

More than 200 litres of alcohol has been seized by police in a series of grog smuggling busts across the Northern Territory.

Between August 14-18, NT Police seized more than 180 litres of alcohol after intercepting multiple vehicles travelling along the Central Arnhem Highway in the Roper Gulf Region as part of an operation targeting illicit supply.

The highway provides access into the remote communities of Barunga, Beswick and Manyallaluk.

Five infringements were issued to drivers for possessing alcohol without a permit and a 28-year-old female was served a summons to appear in court for medium range drink driving and other traffic related offences.

The busts continued at the weekend, with more alcohol destined for communities across the Victoria River region seized.

At 9.40pm Saturday, local police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle carrying four occupants travelling within the remote community of Wadeye.

Police said a search of the vehicle located seven 750ml bottles of spirits along with multiple smaller bottles.

About midnight Saturday, another traffic stop was conducted on a vehicle carrying two occupants travelling near Daly River.

A search of the vehicle located four 1000ml bottles of spirits, six 750ml bottles of spirits, 30 cans of beer and a cask of wine.

All of the seized alcohol has since been destroyed and a number of infringements are expected to be issued.

Acting Commander Shaun Gill said alcohol restrictions within remote communities were “completely ignored” repeatedly.

“These restrictions are in place for the safety of those communities and anyone caught flaunting these rules can expect to be charged for it,” he said.

“Alcohol abuse is directly linked to domestic and family violence, as well as crime and anti-social behaviour, and police will continue to disrupt its supply at every opportunity.”

Anyone with information can call police on 131 444 or make an anonymous report to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
