NT Police arrest 23 year-old man after initial grab spoiled by bystander

An off-duty police officer was held back while trying to help a woman who was allegedly bashed by a man in Alice Springs, allowing the alleged offender to get away.

An off-duty police officer was in the midst of arresting a man when he was suddenly interrupted by a random bystander, allowing the alleged the offender to get away.

About 8.30pm on Thursday, the off-duty police officer was at a shopping complex on Lindsay Avenue, Eastside when he saw a man allegedly punching a woman multiples times to the head.

The off-duty cop intervened and identified himself as a police officer before attempting to restrain the alleged offender.

Police say another man then pulled the officer away, allowing the alleged offender to flee the scene on foot.

The off-duty officer checked on the victim’s welfare before commencing his own shift.

It is believed the alleged offender and victim are known to each other.

A short time later, police received reports that the alleged offender went to the home where the victim was staying and allegedly assaulted her again before fleeing.

Police coordinated a plan for the alleged offender’s arrested, anticipating his return.

A 23-year-old man returned to the residence and was arrested.

He remains in custody and police say charges are expected to be laid.
