CENTRAL Australian cops recovered two stolen vehicles overnight, but also responded to three reports of property break-ins.

It comes as NT Police launches Operation Thayer, a seven-day crime crackdown targeting property offending and assaults in Alice Springs.

Southern Watch Commander Allan Milner said Centre Labour Force on Todd St in the Alice Springs CBD had damage to the front door after offenders broke in and stole several items.

A Samsung phone, cash less than $100 and a motor vehicle key were among the items stolen.

A home in Larapinta on Wednesday afternoon was the second report of a break-in.

Where and how the intruders entered and what they stole remains under investigation.

Tennant Creek had a home break-in the 24-hour period after the offenders broke a rear screen door to enter the home on Thursday between 7am and 12.40pm.

“Stolen was a black Xbox, cash and a Reebok bag,” Cmmr Milner said.

Two stolen vehicles were recovered in Alice Springs on Wednesday, both around 12.50pm but in separate locations.

Offenders involved in the separate incidents remain outstanding and with investigators awaiting forensic results.

Alice Springs cops launch seven-day crime operation

OPERATION Thayer, an NT Police initiative, will be launched in Alice Springs this week in a bid to target anti-social behaviour and property offending for seven days.

A spike in property offending and assaults has led police to deploy additional resources in across crime hot spots and known locations.

Assistant Commissioner for NT Police Force Regional and Remote Operations, Martin Dole, said that the recent wave of criminal activity has led to the rollout of Operation Thayer.

“This past week we’ve seen a significant increase in property crime, including unlawful entries, stolen motor vehicles and random assaults on members of the public,” said AC Dole

“Our existing members have been addressing these issues rightly so, but with the current situation and the upcoming peak season for the southern region, we’ve redirected officers to provide a zero-tolerance response.

“The closure of the Covid border checkpoints allows us to deploy more police resources to provide ongoing and targeted operations heading into the peak tourism season.”

Operation Thayer will be the first police operation prior to the peak tourism season, dedicated to target property offending and anti-social behaviour.
