Fannie Bay IGA front door smashed with an axe overnight

For the fourth time this year, a popular Top End supermarket has had its front doors smashed in.

AN axe was used to senselessly smash the front door of a popular Top End supermarket on Wednesday morning.

A man was recorded on CCTV at the Fannie Bay IGA using a small axe to break the glass pane to the front entrance of the store.

They spent about 90 seconds, hacking at the glass with the weapon.

Two people appear in the footage towards the end of the incident, watching the first man.

A moments later, the man with the axe give up on the mission, with all three leaving the scene together.

The shop was left with about a 50cm wide hole.

It is the fourth time this year the supermarket has fallen victim to a mindless act of crime.

The management of Fannie Bay IGA management did not want to comment.

An NT Police spokesman confirmed the incident was under investigation.

“NT Police are investigating an attempted unlawful entry at a business in Fannie Bay Place overnight,” he said.

“CCTV is currently being reviewed.” In a separate incident in March, NT Police arrested three youths who allegedly smashed their way into the supermarket, stealing a quantity of alcohol and cigarettes, days after there was a brawl outside the shop.
