AN axe was used to senselessly smash the front door of a popular Top End supermarket on Wednesday morning.

A man was recorded on CCTV at the Fannie Bay IGA using a small axe to break the glass pane to the front entrance of the store.

They spent about 90 seconds, hacking at the glass with the weapon.

Two people appear in the footage towards the end of the incident, watching the first man.

A moments later, the man with the axe give up on the mission, with all three leaving the scene together.
