IT'S KFC - but not like you know it.

Toowoomba's newest Korean fried chicken shop - Chimac - has opened in Margaret St, and it's already proven a hit with customers.

Opening for a trial period over the carnival weekend, owner MJ Kim was stunned to sell out of chicken by 7pm on Sunday.

Chimac celebrated its official opening yesterday, and Mr Kim said he was excited to offer something a little different to Toowoomba's food scene.

The restaurant's name comes from the Korean words for chicken and beer - and that's exactly what it specialises in.

"I was thinking it would be a challenge for people to come in here and have a try - but I was pretty surprised. Many people already know Korean fried chicken,” he said.

As well as fried chicken, Mr Kim said Chimac also offered a selection of Japanese and Korean meals, and would later be adding a Korean beer snacks menu.

Chimac will be open seven days a week for the next two weeks while the business figures out trading hours. The restaurant will close for a break ahead of dinner service between 2.30pm and 5pm every day except Sundays.
