The Territory’s road toll has climbed again after a man died in a motorcycle crash south of Darwin.

The tragic truth about road deaths in Australia

A motorcyclist has died in a crash on the Stuart Highway overnight.

Emergency services were called to the scene in Bees Creek at 6.45pm on Thursday, where a man was pronounced dead.

Police believe the man to be aged in his 50s.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash, which occured near Gulnare Road.

“A road closure and diversions were in place for several hours last night while Major Crash detectives recorded the crash scene,” Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said.

“Detectives interviewed a witness to the crash.

“The investigation remains ongoing to confirm the identity of the deceased rider and determine the cause of the crash.”

The highway reopened at 2.30am Friday.

In just nine months the Northern Territory has exceeded last year’s road fatality tally, with 40 people killed on our roads.

This is five more people killed than 2021’s tally.

In an unrelated incident, police were also called to a single-vehicle rollover in Humpty Doo just 15 minutes after and a short drive away from the fatal crash.

St John NT operations manager Craig Garraway told ABC radio the incident, which happened at 7pm Thursday on Acacia Road, was “bizarre”.

“Reports from the scene via 000 were that there was a male person suspended by a seatbelt with quite substantial damage to that car,” Mr Garraway said.

“My understanding is on arrival of paramedics there, the driver had been able to get himself out of the car and left quite hastily, in my understanding, in another vehicle.

“The paramedics have reported that they were pretty much shocked that this person actually got out of this crash alive in the first place.

“(There were) quite substantial damages to my understanding.”
