Major redevelopment of iconic Parap Markets sought by local traders group

Up to $15m is being sought by a market traders’ group to redevelop one of Darwin’s iconic weekend shopping experiences. We reveal the plans for the project.

One of Darwin’s most treasured weekend pitstops could undergo a major redevelopment if a group of traders has its way.

The Parap Village Traders Association is seeking funding commitments and a partnership with the City of Darwin to move forward on a multimillion-dollar masterplan for the area.

The preliminary plan, which is about 30 per cent complete, includes greater foot access into and around the weekly Saturday markets, shade structures and seating areas.

Rossi Architects director Rossi Kourounis, who was contracted to help develop the masterplan, said it would benefit both stallholders and day-to-day businesses in the village, as well as patrons.

“The whole idea is to raise the profile of Parap and create a safer and more usable space,” Mr Kourounis said.

“We’re also looking at the eclectic style of Parap and utilising that in the design philosophy.

“The City of Darwin actually shelved the plan after it was presented to them earlier this year, but we’ve been having discussions with the Territory government to drive some interest.

“The council did put forward some money to develop those plans so it was a disappointing outcome.

“Now we’re hoping the interest from Brent (Potter) will give the council a gentle nudge to bring it to fruition, because it is their land.”

The redevelopment has been a key priority of the newly-elected Member for Fannie Bay Brent Potter.

Mr Potter said the completed project would “ultimately set it up for next 30 years.”

“The masterplan is estimated to be between $12m and $15m,” Mr Potter said.

“Some priorities are to close the road on one side of the markets, level out the floor space, put greater overhead architecture for shade, and replace the rocks out the front of Mad About Coffee with decking.

“I’m very keen to get it off the ground, whether that means it happens in stages.

“The council has already put some money forward to do immediate beautification works.

“The Parap Village Traders Association can also start trialling vehicle access restrictions.”

Mr Potter said the focus on redeveloping the Parap Markets should be broadened to include others in Darwin.

“We need to develop a market strategy across Darwin that includes Nightcliff, Rapid Creek, Mindil Beach and Parap, to name a few” Mr Potter said.

“They’re all on different days and they all offer something different.

“There’s no reason why Darwin can’t be like Singapore or Vietnam when it comes to generating real revenue through market tourism.”

The NT government is also spending $3m on revitalising Bundilla Park, which lies between the Darwin Ski Club and Darwin Sailing Club.

A basketball half-court and four powered food truck sites are the drawcards in the developing plan, which is currently being formed with the City of Darwin.
