A scorching day hasn’t stopped thousands of eager residents downing more than 1100 snags at the opening of a new adventure park in the Red Centre capital.
The Alice Springs Town Council hosted an official opening ceremony for the new adventure park on Saturday, November 2, with 1400 people turning up.
With the day topping 39C, punters lined up to enter and try out the new beach volleyball courts, 18-hole mini-golf course, 3x3 basketball court, table tennis, an adventure playground, an outdoor gym, and BBQ facilities.
Once festivities wrapped up on Saturday another 650 people visited the park on Speed St next to the aquatic centre throughout the rest of the weekend.
Council chief executive Andrew Wilsmore said the adventure park “provides an important space for recreation, exercise, community connection, and fun”.
“We’re 1500kms from the nearest beach, but now just around the corner from a game of beach volleyball, a swim and a picnic in the shade,” he said.
“Central Australian families now have even more ways to keep entertained and stay cool this season.”
Entry to the aquatic centre and adventure park will be free throughout the summer school holidays thanks to a $450,000 commitment from the Northern Territory government.
The funding would cover school holidays until the end of 2025 and Saturday afternoons and Sunday throughout the year, the council said in a statement.
The Alice Springs adventure park was a joint project between the Alice Springs Town Council and the Territory and federal governments.
