An event for veterans at Southport Flying Club on Saturday has honoured those who have fallen as well as those who still serve.
Club president Craig Hobart said the day was a celebration, as opposed to a commemoration, to thank veterans for their service.
“The genesis of this event was one of our club members at the Southport Flying Club tragically lost his son Tom Halloran a couple of years ago in service,” Mr Hobart said.
“And so we’re rallying around his family, along with the RSL supporting them through their grief.”
Around 60 veterans attended with those willing enjoying scenic flights conducted by members of the flying club.
Guests enjoyed democracy sausages, coffee carts and community assets on display such as a PolAir helicopter as well as historical aircraft – guests even enjoyed a visit from premier David Crisafulli.
Mr Hobart said the day was part of a healing process.
“You’ll never, ever get over the loss of child,” he said.
“But this has been a very important process for John (Tom’s father) and his family. It’s given them something to focus on, in terms of a deliverable, something that’s good.
“They don’t want any other veteran to go the way that their son did. So it’s become a real purpose for them.”
Mr Hobart said the club saw an opportunity to support John and his family, and also other veterans – “so we decided to get behind it,” he said.
