Updated: The man charged with a late-night attempted carjacking at Westfield Coomera, while allegedly armed with a revolver that was later determined to be inoperable, was on bail for previous alleged offending, it can be revealed.

Coomera man Malachy James Shottock-Goodwin, 20, appeared in Southport Magistrates Court on Tuesday where he made an application for bail.

Mr Shattock-Goodwin is facing four charges related to Saturday night’s alleged attempted carjacking on Main St.

They include armed robbery, attempted unlawful use of a motor vehicle while armed, unlawful possession of a category H handgun, and possessing utensils or pipes.

Superintendent Brett Jackson previously said police would allege Mr Shattock-Goodwin approached an MG ZS being driven by a 39-year-old Oxenford woman, who was picking her daughter up from work, and produced the firearm.

“Fortunately the woman was able to exit the car and take the keys with her and run to seek help,” he said.

Mr Shattock-Goodwin was arrested a short time later.

The defendant represented himself in court on Tuesday and indicated he would like to apply for bail.

Magistrate Gary Finger said there was a presumption against bail due to the violent nature of the charges.

Mr Shattock-Goodwin protested that the gun was not functional, but Mr Finger said that was irrelevant.

The magistrate further highlighted the fact the defendant was on bail at the time of the alleged commission of the attempted carjacking.

Court records show the defendant is facing additional unrelated charges of entering premises and committing an indictable offence, unlawful entry of a motor vehicle, and two counts of stealing, all allegedly committed at Southport, mostly on March 19 this year.

He asked Mr Shattock-Goodwin why he should be granted bail.

“I’m not too sure your honour, you may do as you please,” the defendant responded.

Mr Finger refused bail and urged the defendant to make an application for Legal Aid representation.

The current charges were adjourned to April 24.

The pre-existing charges will next be mentioned on May 20.

When police arrived, they arrested Mr Shattock-Goodwin and allegedly found the handgun, which was inoperable and unloaded.

“There was no direct threat of the firearm being discharged, however, it would definitely have been harrowing for the female in that vehicle,” Supt Jackson said.

He did not appear in person when his charges were mentioned at Southport Magistrates Court on Monday, with the matter adjourned to Tuesday.
