Mathew John Hamilton faces Toowoomba Magistrates Court for public nuisance, drink driving

Tensions exploded between two mates after a Sunday session at a Toowoomba golf club turned sour, with a local tradie landing himself in hot water over the incident.

A court was been told two mates had been drinking all day before they came to blows in the car park at the Toowoomba City Golf Club.

The incident at 11pm on Sunday, February 19, resulted in Mathew John Hamilton being charged with public nuisance and drink driving over the middle alcohol limit.

The court was told when police arrived, Hamilton parked in front of the officers and when tested returned a blood alcohol concentration of 0.113.

Lawyer Alysha Jacobson said the 41-year-old had gotten in his car in an attempt to find his friend who had run off.

Ms Jacobson said the self-employed carpenter had been helping his mate out and organised work for him at Toowoomba, however after a day of drinking “tensions between the pair boiled over”.

She also noted the incident had marred their friendship.

Magistrate Clair Kelly said Hamilton was lucky police arrived when they did, as he was putting himself and the public at risk by getting behind the wheel while drunk.

Ms Kelly fined Hamilton $650 and disqualified his licence for three months.

The court was told the tradie would not be able to work without his licence, however, he planned to live off his saving and use the time to study business.

No conviction was recorded.
