Logan mother Kylie Noon battles terminal breast cancer diagnosis

A family of six has revealed the reality of watching their mother face her final moments in a cramped room.

A Logan family of six has revealed the heartache of watching their mother as she lies in a cramped room, paralysed, while battling terminal cancer.

David Noon said he fell instantly in love with his now wife Kylie when they met in 2002 after recognising her kind heart and generous soul.

They raised their four sons, now aged 12 to 19 years, and made a loving home at a Housing Commission property they have lived in for the past 16 years.

Mrs Noon, 38, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020 and continued to battle through multiple treatments before receiving a terminal metastatic diagnosis in January this year.

Doctors said a critical tumour had appeared at the top of the spine.

After having a steel rod implanted into her spine, Mrs Noon was unable to move from her bed with no feeling in most of her body.

A representative of 4Voices, an organisation assisting vulnerable women in the community, said Mrs Noon’s palliative care bed was less than 1m from the entrance to their home.

“Her bed occupies three quarters of the tiny living room, adjacent to a small ill-equipped kitchen and four big teenage boys occupy two tiny bedrooms and can barely walk past their mum’s bed without knocking it,’’ they said.

“It is confronting to see but then you realise that this is precisely where Kylie has always been – in the centre of the household, the pivot point, the glue that binds this amazingly cohesive family.

“It makes it somehow even sadder.’’

Mr Noon said the diagnosis was incredibly shocking and surreal.

“We spend our quality time together going to the park and making BBQ’s outside,” Mr Noon said.

“I wanted to run when we found out, it was very scary and I was left thinking what can we do?’’

After spending four months in the Princess Alexandra Hospital, the couple fought for Mrs Noon to spend her final months at home with her family.

Mr Noon, who suffered a brain aneurysm two decades ago, has been caring for his children and wife ever since.

“We battled to get her home, this is where she belongs,” Mr Noon said.

“I give her all of her medication, this is where she wants to be.’’

The couple was married only two years ago after Mrs Noon’s initial diagnosis.

Mrs Noon said she wanted to make sure her sons knew that I had the same last name as hers.

“We want to spend every second possible together,” she said.

Mr Noon said the past few years had seen “major hiccups”.

“We’re going to try to get her up in the wheelchair and hopefully go to a park but it is difficult because she’s always sore,” he said.

“We’re not going to give up, we want to go to the park as a family just one more time.’’

4Voices has started a GoFundMe page to support the family after Mrs Noon’s passing.

Mr Noon said funds would contribute to their children’s future and Mrs Noon’s funeral.

“She is so special and needs a good farewell,’’ he said.

“We would like to thank the hospital, all the wonderful nurses and 4Voices for all of your support.’’

Mrs Noon said she did not want her family to worry.

“I want to be able to give my family the opportunity to say goodbye to me properly, so that they can go on with their lives knowing that I will always be with them in spirit,’’ she said.

“I would appreciate anything (people) can give.’’
