St Patrick’s College have claimed the double header over Trinity Bay SHS, with the Payne Cup team continuing the dominance started in the Cowboys Challenge earlier in the day.

Saints’ 46-6 win has kept the door wide open for them to finish in the final two of their pool with one round to go.

While Trinity Bay will be licking their wounds, they will need to find the strength to get up for the final game against top of the table Kirwan SHS as they chase their first win.

The first 10 minutes of the match were even as Saints scored only for Trinity to respond minutes later, levelling the score at 6-all.

But the St Patrick’s worked together in the later parts of the first half, showing a strong defensive structure and an exciting attacking brand to lead 18-6 at the break.

They continued their momentum in the second half as turnovers resulted in two tries early to extend the lead to 28-6.

Trinity pressured the defence of the Saints midway through the second half but couldn’t break the try line.

Saints five-eighth Adam McSherry had a day out, scoring four tries to go with his seven conversions.

The Saints lifted the pressure in the back end of the second half, scoring three tries in the last 11 minutes with McSherry converting all of them to win by 40 points.

It sets up a mouth-watering match up between St Patrick’s College and Ignatius Park College in the final round.

Iggy Park played out a draw with Kirwan on Wednesday, leaving them just half a game ahead of St Patrick’s with the winner to claim second spot.

COWBOYS CHALLENGE

St Patrick’s College make it four wins in a row after a dominant first half against Trinity Bay in their Cowboys Challenge clash on Thursday.

The Saints ran out eventual winners, 26-12, withstanding a second half fightback from Trinity Bay.

The defensive pressure from the Saints was red hot from the first kick as Trinity Bay struggled to break out of their defensive 50.

It didn’t take long for the Saints to break through, scoring the first try in the seventh minute.

The Saints didn’t let the foot off the gas, piling on a further three tries inside 15 minutes to hold a 22-0 lead into halftime.

There was plenty to look at for Trinity Bay when they went into break, especially how they could break through in attack.

They came out firing in the second half, showing a determination to minimise the scoreline.

It took just six minutes to score the opening try in the second half and when theyn added a second minutes later to reduce the margin to 10 points, St Pats’ hearts were in mouths.

But Saints regrouped and scored shortly afterwards to put it to bed.

PREVIEW

Trinity Bay SHS are as hungry as ever to tick off their first Aaron Payne Cup win of the campaign this Thursday, according to coach Dan Weston.

Weston’s side has shown competitive flashes during their four games so far this season despite the scorecard showing a 108-point differential.

Trinity Bay will line up against St Patrick’s College on Thursday afternoon, the second time the two sides have met this tournament.

The Payne Cup and Cowboys Challenge double-header will be live streamed exclusively on KommunityTV from 10am.

Weston said he can tell the boys are working towards the first win.

“We said at the start of the tournament, we will see our growth by the wins we have at the end of it,” Weston said.

“And despite not having one under our belt, the boys have been playing really good football and you can see the growth and development within.

“We have had good starts to games, especially the last time we played St Pat’s.

“But it is more about focusing on just playing out the whole game rather than a good 40 to 60 minutes.

“The last time we played them, we let them pile on a few late tries and end up winning quite convincingly in the end.”

It is just the second year Trinity Bay SHS have been involved in the competition.

St Patrick’s claimed their first win of the season against Trinity Bay in round two with a 32-16 victory.

In the first game back since the school holiday break, St Pat’s won their second game, in round four against previously undefeated Kirwan SHS.

Coach Ian Schifilliti said his side was starting to build some momentum.

“The boys are really focused on what they want out of this tournament and how they can continue to improve each week,” Schifilliti said.

“Coming up against Trinity Bay, they are a strong school and you can’t take them lightly at all.

“They have been in games every time we have seen them play this tournament.

“Against us they burst out of the blocks and played some very good football and were tough to peg back.

“But that is the belief within our group is to chase down what we know we can.

“The boys showed that last week when they knocked off Kirwan who are a really strong side.”

St Pat’s Cowboys Challenge side lost their opening game but have dominated the following three weeks as they look to make it four wins in a row on Thursday.

Kick off for the Cowboy Challenge is at 10am Thursday, followed by the Aaron Payne Cup at 12:30pm.
