$15m Palmerston pool

Whether you’re into swimming, cycling, viewing art or kicking the footy, some of your favourite local hangouts may be about to undergo major upgrades.

There are also a few shiny new projects coming up, from two major art galleries to a dog park in Palmerston and a skate park in Alice Springs.

Here is a list of what projects are on the way and how they are tracking.

Casuarina Pool

One of the northern suburbs’ most beloved community facilities is getting a $25m cash splash.

The Casuarina Aquatic and Leisure Centre is currently closed as the redevelopment progresses, with three shaded pools, a resort-style lagoon and a basketball half-court key features of the finished product.

It is anticipated to be complete by late 2024.

Bagot Park

A multimillion-dollar revamp of Bagot Park is under way, which includes upgrades to the facility’s velodrome.

Darwin City Council has endorsed a 10-year masterplan that aims to improve the park’s sporting and community facilities, footpaths, tree canopy and car parks.

Seniors’ exercise equipment, barbecues and kids’ nature play also form part of the project.

Different features will be complete at various stages, with the masterplan yet to be fully funded.

Bundilla Park

The green space between the Darwin Ski Club and Trailer Boat Club is set to undergo a $3m activation.

Four food truck sites and a basketball half-court are set to be key drawcards of the Bundilla beachside, formerly known as Vesteys Beach.

The Territory government is now working with the City of Darwin to develop the council-owned land.

Northern Territory Art Gallery

A CBD space between the Esplanade and Bennet St is set to undergo a $145m revamp, with a shiny new art gallery the centrepiece of the redevelopment.

Works on the Northern Territory Art Gallery, which will later be given a dual Aboriginal title, are set to begin this year.

Landscaping around the area will also be enhanced in order to hold more outdoor events.

A project deadline has not been released.

Palmerston SWELL

Dubbed as one of the most exciting projects Palmerston has ever seen, the $19.4m redevelopment of the satellite city’s public pool is full steam ahead.

The end result is set to include a “Ninja Warrior-style obstacle course unlike anything in the Top End,” as well as several pools for swimmers of all kids.

It is scheduled to be complete by November this year.

Zuccoli Community Centre

Our furry friends will soon get to run amok at a new dog park in Palmerston.

The project forms stage one of the $20m Zuccoli Community Centre redevelopment.

Grand visions for the rest of the centre include a children’s library, a pump track, community garden, playground and a skate park.

The dog park is set to open in November this year while the rest of the facilities are yet to be funded.

Freds Pass Sports and Recreation Reserve

The largest multi-use sport and recreational facility in the Territory is set to undergo a massive upgrade.

The new ‘rural Marrara’ will be complete with netball, basketball and tennis facilities.

The reserve already caters to Aussie rules, archery, athletics, cricket, paintball, rugby league, union, soccer and equestrian sports.

The federal government has promised $10m, while the Litchfield council is pushing for matched funding from the Territory government.

Alice Springs CBD revitalisation

The Red Centre is set to get a huge revamp, with the possibility of opening Todd Mall up to traffic at the top of the council’s wishlist.

Alice Springs Town Council is currently seeking tenders for the first stage of the project.

Mayor Matt Paterson said while he supported traffic driving down the mall in a bid to boost business, any development would be open to public consultation.

The final design and all consultations are planned to be complete by November this year.

The federal government has committed $20m towards the project.

Alice Springs Skate Park

Newland Park in Gillen will be transformed into a state-of-the-art skate park this year.

Mayor Matt Paterson said the tender was awarded to national company Playce, with the project expected to cost between $6m to $8m.

“The process will be underway early in the new year but what an exciting time,” he said.

“We’re really investing for the Alice Springs community and for families.”

National Aboriginal Art Gallery

Touted as the first of its kind in Australia, funding and land has been locked in for the National Aboriginal Art Gallery.

The cultural centrepiece will be built over Alice Springs’ Anzac Oval despite protests of traditional owners.

The project has received $80m and $50m commitments from the federal and Territory governments respectively, but a timeline remains unclear.

A design is expected to be complete by late 2023.

Alice Springs Aquatic and Leisure Centre

The Red Centre’s community swimming pool will be enhanced with a new playground, mini golf and outdoor gym equipment.

The additions are costed at about $1.1m and are expected to be complete by December this year.

Alice Springs company MPH has been awarded the playground project tender.

Katherine Pool

One of the few places to take a safe saltie-free dip in the Big Rivers region is set to undergo a $10m upgrade.

Katherine Aquatic Centre is primed to get a $10m upgrade, which will include the addition of a splash pool.

It will be the facility’s first revamp in 40 years.

A plan now needs to be developed for the federally-funded project.
