Two tourists from New South Wales were killed in a tragic remote NT crash, with police now appealing to the public for information.

TWO people who died in a tragic accident on the Stuart Hwy this week were tourists from New South Wales.

The bodies of a 74-year-old man and a 67-year-old woman were found in the Mitsubishi Pajero by a passing motorist on Monday, August 1.

Officers from Mataranka and Maranboy attended the single-vehicle crash 10km south of Larrimah.

The pair are understood to be tourists from Sydney.

Days after the crash, NT Police appealed to the public for information to establish a timeline for the crash.

“A passing truck driver noticed the vehicle off the road around 6.30pm on Monday … and reported it to police but we don’t know exactly when the crash happened,” Detective Sergeant Jeshua Kelly said.

“It’s possible that other motorists passed the scene without realising it was a crash, so we’re asking anyone who was travelling in the area on Monday to think back, check your dashcams, and contact police if you remember anything about a grey Mitsubishi Pajero on the eastern side of the highway south of Larrimah.”

July 1: Northern Territory Police are investigating after the bodies of a 74-year-old man and a 67-year-old woman were discovered by a passing motorist, 10km south of Larrimah.

Police said the since vehicle crash occurred on Monday evening, with officers from Mataranka and Maranboy attending the double-fatal crash.

Detective Senior Sergeant Corey Borton said traffic diversions were in place overnight as detectives from the Major Crash Investigation Unit travelled from Darwin.

“This is a tragic way to end a long weekend, and while we are still investigating the causes of this crash, we’d just remind all road users to take extra care,” Sgt. Borton said.

“Slow down and take a break if you are travelling long distances.”

St John Ambulance NT Operations Manager Craig Garraway said two people had passed away in a crash at Larrimah.

“We did triple-0 get reports of a crash down there with two people in that car,” Mr Garraway told ABC Darwin.

Mr Garraway said police were investigating the incident in the remote town, 180km south of Katherine.

“Police will be working to work out what happened there.”
