A Darwin man has been sentenced to five years and seven months’ imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to possessing thousands of photos and videos of child abuse material.
The 53-year-old man was caught after the Australian Federal Police worked alongside NT Police members to identify him after he was flagged in October last year by the United States’ National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children.
AFP Superintendent Gregory Davis said the man had been found in possession of more than 3500 files spread across a hard drive, two SD cards, a USB, five mobile phones and a laptop, during a raid on his Karama home.
Mr Davis said the man was charged at the time with one count of possessing child abuse material accessed or obtained using a carriage service and he pleaded guilty to the charge in September 2024.
He said the man was sentenced in Darwin’s Supreme Court on Tuesday, where he was handed a three-year non-parole period.
“We want to send a clear message that perpetrators will be caught and brought before the courts,” he said.
“These are real victims who are severely impacted for life every time their image is accessed and shared.”
NT Police Detective Acting Sergeant Duane Commandeur said the investigation showed the importance of “collaborative interagency efforts to tirelessly pursue and apprehend offenders”.
“NT (Joint Anti Child Exploitation Team) will continue to work alongside our law enforcement partners to combat all forms of child exploitation,” he said.
