Ikea unlikely to set up Toowoomba store

IT'S the store that everyone wants in Toowoomba.

IT'S the store that everyone wants in Toowoomba.

Polling has consistently shown that Garden City residents want an Ikea in their town.

But what chance have we got of one coming here?

An Ikea spokesman confirmed the multinational - which designs and sells ready-to-assemble furniture appliances and home accessories - had been investigating the market.

But they stopped short of saying one was coming to town any time soon.

"Ikea is always exploring opportunities in the market," the spokesman said.

Hopes have been raised that the chain may be investigating setting up shop in Toowoomba, with the $500 million Grand Central redevelopment touted as a possible location.

But the spokesman dashed those hopes - for the moment.

"We do not currently have plans to open a store in Toowoomba," they said.

In 2014 The Chronicle revealed that Ikea, David Jones and Costco were "scoping out" the city.

Since then the retail giants have been quiet about their plans.

The closest Ikea to Toowoomba is in Logan.

The other stores at the top of our wishlist include department store David Jones, global doughnut company Krispy Kreme and cosmetics retailer Lush.
