The symbiotic surfing bird was spotted by Top End fishos on December 22.

Faith Holbourn said she was fishing with her partner Chris Murray and friend Zad Butcher when they saw the unusual sight between Saltwater Arm and Tiwi Island.

“My partner Chris spotted the bird on what he thought was a log,” Ms Holbourn said.

“On closer inspection we discovered it was actually a sea turtle.

“It gives a new meaning to hitching a ride.”

Ms Holbourn and her fishing partners had never seen anything like it.

“We were all pretty surprised and stoked to see this amazing occurrence,” Ms Holbourn said.

“It was an amazing day complete with thunder, lightning and a good haul of fish.”
