Christmas Day alleged drug driver rolls vehicle in Katherine

December 25, 8am: A man has been arrested in Katherine for alleged drug driving after he rolled his road train on the Stuart Highway, police have said.

Police responded to calls on Christmas morning that two rear trailers of a road train had rolled about 40km north of Katherine.

A passing driver stopped to help decouple the rolled trailers while the truck cab and the first trailer remained upright.

One detached trailer was in the median strip of the Stuart Highway near the Edith Falls turnoff and the other was on the left-hand side of the north bound lanes, partially protruding into the lane, police said.

The 35-year-old driver of the crashed road train left the area while the assisting driver called emergency services at 08.06am.

Katherine officers attended the scene and found the driver of the crashed vehicle at a rest stop about 4km north of the crash scene at about 11am.

A search of the man found prohibited drugs and drug paraphernalia.

The driver was arrested and taken back to Katherine watch house.

‘Targeted’: Man attacked with hammer in Darwin home invasion

December 23, 10am: A man has been left with serious head injuries, and four teens assaulted in what police allege was a “targeted” home invasion and attack.

A 57-year-old man is in a critical condition at Royal Darwin Hospital after he was allegedly assaulted with a hammer by two men in a Ludmilla residence about 1.30am on Monday morning, police said.

Four teenagers aged between 12 and 14 were also in the residence on Mawalan Court at the time, police said.

They suffered minor injuries, and two were taken to hospital for treatment.

An NT Police spokesman said the two alleged offenders’ identities were unknown to police, and they remained at large as of Monday morning.

“At this stage it appears to be a targeted attack by two offenders,” Assistant Commissioner Matt Hollamby told media earlier on Monday morning.

“Four teenagers were also present and suffered some minor injuries.

“The understanding is that the weapon was a hammer which was brought with the person to the scene.”

Major crime investigators are in the early stages of their investigation.

Anyone with information has been asked to call 131 444 and quote P24357169.
