A 33-YEAR-OLD ice addict who drove dangerously in a stolen car, ramming a police car and another vehicle on Toowoomba's outskirts, has been sentenced to four years in jail.
Michael Charles Keith Lasserre had broken into a Harristown home in the early hours of August 9 last year and stolen property including keys to a Volkswagen Polo which he then drove away, Toowoomba District Court heard.
Police eventually spotted the vehicle near Bowenville three days later in what was the start of a one-hour pursuit during which the Volkswagen was seen to swerve into the path of oncoming traffic on the Warrego Highway.
He had driven over police spikes and continued, Crown prosecutor Paul Bannister told the court.
When Lasserre stopped for fuel in Biddeston, police had tried to corner him with their vehicles but the 33-year-old had driven off with a police officer leaning into the vehicle.
He then rammed the police car in front and drove on, turning into a farm where he rammed the car of a farmer tending to cattle, Mr Bannister said.
Lasserre got out of the car and ran but was apprehended after he fell trying to jump a barbed wire fence.
He was found to be high on ice at the time, the court heard.
Lasserre had spent the ensuing time in custody before pleading guilty to a total 47 charges including burglary, dangerous driving while adversely affected by drugs and unlawful use of a motor vehicle causing damage.
The court heard he had been off parole just one month after serving time for robbery when he committed these offences.
Chief Judge Kerry O'Brien sentenced Lasserre to four years in jail but declared the 163 days spent in pre-sentence custody as time served under the sentence and ordered he be eligible to apply for release from jail on parole as of June 20 next year.
