While Covid-19 has disrupted the lives of many across the globe, some local farmers and their small businesses have experienced substantial growth.
Owners of local venture Budgee Garlic and Herbs Rod and Joan Kambouris said since the pandemic began 15 months ago, they have seen a rise in demand for their products from across the country.
“In the past the lion’s share of our business has come from local sales at the Toowoomba Farmers Market,” Mr Kambouris said.
“But we are completely astounded as to how that has changed over the past 12 months with our online sales just taking off.”
Operating on a small farm in the scenic foothills of the Great Diving Range about 30 minutes south of Toowoomba, the couple grow and harvest their own chemical-free garlic and herbs.
“We love our local customers and will continue to prioritise their orders,” Ms Kambouris said.
“But it is exciting to know we have a whole new customer base out there waiting to sample our locally grown herbs, garlic, homemade relishes and sauces – all produced right here in Toowoomba.”
With the assistance of Kristen O’Brien from Dine Darling Downs, the couple was able to recently rebrand and reboot their online store to offer a larger range of products and easier shipping options.
The business owners plan to expand further next year and are set to release recipes for new sauce and relish products soon.
