Police have urged motorists to take extra care on the roads as heavy rain continues to pound the Gold Coast.
Footage posted to social media showed the driver of a Holden ute appearing to lose control on a street in Upper Coomera on Sunday as motorists grappled with wet conditions.
The ute was seen spinning as it turned onto City Centre Dr from Commercial St.
The dashcam footage was posted to Upper Coomera Community page with the caption: “The wet weather brings out all the fools. Lucky there was no one trying to cross the road or turn the corner.”
The vehicle then briefly proceeded down the wrong side of the road, before crossing into the correct lane.
The incident came as a flood warning was issued for the Gold Coast, with more rain on the way.
A Queensland Police Service (QPS) spokesperson said with recent rain making the roads unusually dangerous, police wished to remind motorists to take extra precautions in the wet with these simple tips when driving.
- Turn your headlights on for better visibility.
- Maintain a safer distance (double the distance) between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you.
- Do not use cruise control in the rain or when a heavy downpour has occurred.
- Be aware of your blind spots and the potential blind spots for other vehicles.
- Motorcyclists and cyclists are often harder to see in the rain and lowlight conditions, so be aware of your surroundings.
- Approach and navigate roundabouts at a slower speed on wet roads to avoid skidding and aquaplaning.
- Perform a few quick vehicle safety checks to ensure that your windscreen wipers are working correctly, and that all front and rear lights, including indicators are working.
- Finally, double check the tread on your tyres to ensure the tread is at least 1.55mm deep across the whole tyre and never attempt to drive through flood water.
