NRL great Mat Rogers is backing the Gold Coast Titans trio playing State of Origin to use the experience to help turn the NRL side’s trainwreck season around.
The club is languishing at the bottom of the table after starting the season well before losses to the Canberra Raiders, North Queensland Cowboys and Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs.
Mat Rodgers believes the plays on Origin duty - Moeaki Fotuaika, Tino Fa’asuamaleaui and Beau Fermor - can turn the tide at the Titans after donning the Maroon jersey at Suncorp stadium on Wednesday night.
“It’s unfortunate the way the Titans have been travelling this year but hopefully with these three guys playing Origin it sparks the team back into some form,” Rogers said.
“To have Tino and Mo (Moeaki) starting in the middle and Beau coming off the bench, all of them have earned their spot and I’m excited for the opportunity for them to be on the bigger stage”.
“Everyone sort of keeps banging on about how good (NSW) looks. They’re underestimating the quality of the Queensland side,” he said.
“Having Cam Munster and Tino back in, they were certainly missed last year. Beau Fermor has been in phenomenal form.”
He’s so confident of a Maroon’s win he’s partnered with Victoria Bitters with rival NSW legend Bryan Fletch to promote boxes of gimmicky Very Bitter Tissues. They’re a friendly Origin keepsake that Rogers hopes he won’t need after round one.
“My wife might be sending them to me or I might be sending them to her. I don’t know,” Rogers said.
“It’s gonna be a tight game. 20-14 to Queensland, I like.”
He’s encouraging footy fans to jump online and secure their tissues before kick-off.
