A man has allegedly been punched to the ground and robbed on Saturday evening in the latest violent incident at problem-plagued Burleigh Heads.
Police and paramedics were called to an area near Rotary Park shortly after the incident occurred on February 8.
“Initial investigations indicate that around 9pm, a man was walking on The Esplanade when an altercation occurred between him and a group of males,” a Queensland Police Service (QPS) spokeswoman said, in a statement to the Bulletin.
“It is alleged a male from the group punched the male victim in the head, knocking him to the ground.
“While the victim was on the ground, it is alleged another male from the group stole the victim’s phone and watch.”
The group of offenders were then seen getting into a 4WD which, according to the QPS spokeswoman, left the scene in an unknown direction. A 42-year-old man, and alleged victim of the attack, was assessed at the scene by paramedics.
Officers are appealing for anyone in the area at the time of the incident, who may have CCTV or dashcam footage, to get in touch. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
The attack comes just over a fortnight after two boys were left with serious head and facial injuries on Australia Day when they were allegedly bashed by a group of up to 30 teenagers.
About two hours after the incident at Burleigh Heads on Saturday officers were called to a separate alleged robbery and assault at Coolangatta shortly after 11pm.
“A woman was walking on Marine Parade towards Kirra when an altercation occurred between her and a group of people. It is alleged a female from the group punched the female victim in the head, knocking her to the ground,” the QPS spokeswoman said. “While the victim was on the ground, it is alleged other members of the group assaulted the victim. The group then left the scene by foot back towards Coolangatta.”
A 42-year-old woman was assessed by paramedics at the scene. According to the QPS spokeswoman the victim has not made an official complaint to officers at this time.
