Kayn Chace Morris granted bail after allegedly deliberately running down Bobby Widl at Pimpama

The family of a man who suffered serious injuries in an alleged daylight hit-and-run have described the ‘confronting’ moment they arrived at the hospital.

A man accused of deliberately mowing down another man on a Gold Coast street in a shocking hit-and-run has been freed on bail.

Kayn Chace Morris is charged with acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm, common assault (domestic violence offence), and driver failing to remain at an incident and render assistance.

The 28-year-old had been in custody since his arrest on Friday afternoon, shortly after he allegedly drove at Bobby Widl as he stood on a footpath along Bull Rd, Pimpama.

Mr Widl, 42, was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries. It is alleged he and Mr Morris were known to one another.

The alleged assault victim was a woman also at the scene at the time.

Southport Magistrates Court was told on Saturday that Mr Widl had been placed in an induced coma, with his accused attacker’s case adjourned to this week to await any updates on his condition.

Mr Morris was back in court on Monday to apply for bail, where it was heard Mr Widl remained in hospital but was now “conscious and alert”.

His injuries include bleeding on the brain and fractures to his skull, spine, and ribs, the court was told.

Prosecutor Corey Cook opposed Mr Morris’ bail application, saying it was a strong case against him with CCTV footage of the alleged hit-and-run.

“It’s not as if he’s just allegedly committed the offence on a random occasion – it’s a series of events that have led up to this point,” Mr Cook said.

“Ultimately, Your Honour, there’s erratic behaviour here, protracted violence and there’s a risk of interference.”

Mr Morris was supported by several people in the courtroom gallery.

Defence solicitor Mollie Roper, of Allen & Searing Criminal Lawyers, said her client intended to defend the undeniably serious allegations that were before the court.

Ms Roper told the court the Pimpama man had no history of similar offending and had several mental health diagnoses that would make time in custody more difficult for him than most.

Magistrate Pamela Dowse described the circumstances of the charges as "quite frightening”, eventually granting Mr Morris’ bail under strict conditions.

They include that he live at Miami and not go to or be within 5km of Pimpama, and have no contact with either of his alleged victims.

His case was adjourned to August 20.

Speaking on Monday, Mr Widl’s niece Jade Quinton-Widl described her ‘Uncle Bobby’ as an “extremely charismatic person” who was always smiling and having a laugh.

“There is not much that gets him down,” she said.

Ms Quinton-Widl said her uncle was thrown into a parked car during the alleged incident, with his head taking the brunt of the impact.

“When we arrived at the hospital he was unresponsive and it was very confronting,” she said.

“He’ll have to have plastic surgery on his face and chest and then very likely more on his knees.”

Ms Quinton-Widl started a GoFundMe page to help take the financial strain off of her uncle.

“He is a sole trader, so if he is not working he’s not getting an income,” she said.

“He’ll have a very long recovery time and we are making this GoFundMe to raise money for ongoing living expenses.”

Police are urging any witnesses to come forward while investigations are ongoing.
