A driver on his morning commute has sparked savage reaction from other motorists after being captured with a dog in his lap.

The man was snapped on October 17 stopped at lights in busy Gold Coast suburb of Southport, appearing to have his fluffy friend perched in front of the wheel.

The dog seemed to be sitting comfortably and was not in any distress, turning heads from other motorists.

“It was just bizarre – I get transporting your dog is needed but really? In the lap is needlessly dangerous,” one witness said.

It is an offence under Queensland law to drive with a pet in your lap, with fines potentially reaching more than $3000.

“It is an offence to drive with an animal in your lap or to drive when you don’t have proper control of your vehicle,” the Queensland Government website states.

“We recommend animals travelling inside your vehicle be restrained in some way for the safety and welfare of the animal and the occupants of the vehicle.

“The road rules do not specifically require an animal to be restrained while travelling inside a vehicle.”
