Tyson Stengle rushed to hospital after partying at nightclub

Teammates have embraced Cats forward Tyson Stengle at training after news broke that he was found unresponsive at a Geelong nightclub and hospitalised.

Cats skipper Patrick Dangerfield says the club will “always support” Tyson Stengle, after the star forward was found unresponsive at a Geelong nightclub and rushed to hospital.

Stengle was celebrating with friends and at Bloom in Geelong’s CBD on Sunday, just hours after playing a matchwinning role against the Kangaroos on Saturday afternoon.

Speaking outside the club on Tuesday morning, Dangerfield said there were “no issues” with players going out mid-season.

“We treat our players like adults,” he said.

“They have every right to go out and enjoy themselves.

“Clearly with that, you’ve got to do it responsibly and there has been a bit of an error in judgment with that.”

Dangerfield said Stengle would be well-supported by the club.

“We love Tys and we will always support him,” he said.

It’s understood concerned friends helped Stengle, 25, out of the popular nightspot, before he was taken to Geelong hospital in a serious condition about 2am.

It’s believed he spent several hours there before he was discharged.

Players rallied around Stengle on Tuesday, giving him hugs as they trained beside the Cattery at St Mary’s.

In a statement on X, the Geelong Football Club acknowledged “a health incident involving Tyson Stengle over the weekend” had taken place.

“Most importantly Tyson is okay and attended the club on Monday,” it said.

“The club’s priority is Tyson’s mental health and wellbeing.”

There were suggestions that Stengle’s drink may have been spiked during his night out following the club’s win against North Melbourne in Hobart but Victoria Police said it was not aware of the incident or of possible drink spiking at the venue on Sunday.

Footage believed to be from the night in question shows young people dancing to electronic music in the underground club.

The Cats landed back in Melbourne late on Saturday and Stengle then hit the town in Geelong.

It’s understood he was not out with any teammates.

Stengle is a regular at Geelong’s nightspots and it’s also understood he was recently refused entry at a venue due to being heavily intoxicated.

That led to a minor argument between Stengle and the nightclub’s security guards.

Stengle arrived at the Cats in 2022 after parting ways with Adelaide just two years earlier following a string of off-field incidents.

He faced a suspension in 2019 after he and then-teammate Brad Crouch were caught by police with an illicit substance in the Adelaide CBD.

The next year he was suspended for four matches and fined $2500 due to a drink-driving incident in which he blew a blood-alcohol reading of 0.125.

Since then he has become a mainstay of Geelong’s forward line, earning all-Australian honours during the team’s 2022 premiership run.

He signed a five-year contract with the team last month after speculation he may explore other options.

At this stage Stengle is still expected to play against Adelaide at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday.
