The new state government-funded scoreboard at the southern end of GMHBA Stadium is expected to be in place in time for the Cats’ first home game in season 2025.
The $3m in funding that facilitated the upgrade formed part of Labor’s 2024/25 state budget. The announcement, which created much discussion given the stadium had already been a big beneficiary of taxpayer funds, came less than two months after Premier Jacinta Allan visited to mark the completion of the $142m stage five redevelopment that her government solely funded.
The old scoreboard had reached the end of its life and was no longer supported by the manufacturer.
The stadium also received $1.1m for facility maintenance and flood-mitigation works in last year’s budget.
Kardinia Park Stadium Trust chief executive Gerard Griffin said the scoreboard replacement project was on track to be finished in time for the Cats’ March 15 clash against Fremantle.
Mr Griffin said the flood mitigation works were also underway and should be completed mid-year.
The stadium’s stage five redevelopment saw the new northern stand named after Joel Selwood.
Replacing the Ford Stand, it holds 14,000 people and includes a Gary Ablett Terrace on the ground level of the two-tiered stand.
It also contains a new Fred Flanagan Room.
The new northern entry point to Kardinia Park is now known as Djilang Plaza.
“Kardinia Park is a very special place for Geelong,” Ms Allan said last year.
“We are proud to have backed it every step of the way because of what it means both for sport, for cultural events, but also to support the economic and cultural activities here in the Geelong community.”
