New data has revealed the Geelong region’s best schools for NAPLAN results, with Geelong Grammar School and Kardinia International College coming out on top.
An independent analysis of newly released 2024 NAPLAN results has revealed the schools which performed the best in the year 5 and 9 tests.
Geelong Grammar School in Corio was the highest-performing local primary school, while Kardinia International College in Bell Post Hill defended its crown from 2023 as the highest performing secondary school in the region.
Kardinia principal Ms Catherine Lockhart said the entire school community was delighted with its results, especially as said the school did not specifically prepare any students for NAPLAN testing.
“It’s testament to our excellent teaching staff and our students and their families who are engaged in learning,” Ms Lockhart said.
The 2024 NAPLAN results were released on the My School website on Wednesday.
To determine how each school performed, the scores for all five test subjects for the student cohort were combined and the average found.
Those five subjects are reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy.
Kardinia International College posted an average of 620.6, sitting on top of the local secondary school list comfortably, almost 20 points ahead of its closest competitor.
The Geelong College came in second with 601.6 and was followed by fellow private school Geelong Grammar (600.4) — the same top three schools as last year.
Christian College (582.6) and Sacred Heart College in Newtown (580) rounded out the top five.
The highest-performing government schools were Matthew Flinders Girls Secondary College (572) and Belmont High School (569).
Geelong Grammar topped the local list for primary schools, posting an average of 533.2, almost 14 clear of last year’s list leaders Chilwell Primary School, which this year was ranked second in Geelong and received a score of 519.8.
Chilwell led the way for government primary schools, with Ocean Grove Primary (518), Queenscliff Primary (517.8) and Fyans Park Primary (516) among other state schools with strong results.
Ocean Grove primary school principal Scott McCumber said the school was “incredibly proud” of the year five students’ outstanding results, but not particularly surprised.
The school has consistently received high NAPLAN results, ranking second among the region’s primary schools in 2023.
“It’s hard work, not rocket science,” Mr McCumber said.
“I’m really proud of the teachers and school community.”
Mr McCumber attributed their consistent success to committed parents and carers, high levels of student engagement and most significantly, excellent teaching and learning.
“These results are indicative of a strong, collaborative and supportive learning environment, where students are at the forefront.”
St Mary’s School (518.2) in Geelong received the third highest results among local primary schools, coming in as the highest ranked Catholic school.
Principal Annice Lappin said NAPLAN was a reflection of the school’s excellent teaching practices.
“We have worked strategically over many years to provide our students with the skills and capabilities that will serve them well as lifelong learners,” she said.
Special schools, schools with fewer than 20 students enrolled, and schools that did not report any results for NAPLAN subjects were excluded from the analysis.
