A mother and daughter jumped their neighbour’s fence to save two dogs from a tiger snake in Lovely Banks.

Katrina Watts arrived home with her daughter, Georgia Adamson, on December 17 about 3pm when she saw her neighbour’s dog, Louie, throwing something around in it’s mouth and barking.

Ms Watts went to see what was happening and saw a tiger snake in the almost two-year-old staffy’s mouth.

“I was trying to call (Louie) over to get them away from the snake,” she said.

“Then my daughter jumped the fence and ran down to the house to see if anyone was home.

“Louie had gone to follow her but he didn’t look well at all.

“He then collapsed and she picked him up.”

Ms Watts said she was “petrified” of snakes, but said her only thought was to get the dogs away from the snake.

“Saving the dog was all we could think about,” she said.

Ms Watts was getting ready to take Louie to the vet when the dogs’ owner, Kate Lake, pulled into the driveway.

“I told her ‘I’m really sorry we jumped your fence but I just had to get the dogs away from the snake’,” Ms Watts said.

Louie had been bitten by the snake and Ms Lake rushed him, and her second dog Buttons, to Geelong Emergency Vet.

Louie was given two doses of antivenom but he stopped breathing, so he was put on a mechanical ventilator.

“We’ve been told if he wasn’t given the antivenom straight away or put on the ventilator, he could have died,” Ms Lake said.

Although Buttons was not bitten, his condition was monitored before he was released later that night.

On December 18, Louie was taken off the ventilator and his condition was monitored before he was able to go home on December 19.

“For the next month, it’s pretty much no activity … so he can recover properly,” Ms Lake said.

She praised her neighbours for putting their own lives at risk to save her dogs.

“There are good people out there,” Ms Lake said.
