COUNCIL will work to secure local contracts and fix what it views as design flaws in the winning Nexus Second Range Crossing design.

Mayor Paul Antonio and Infrastructure Services chairman Cr Carol Taylor welcomed yesterday's announcement but said an extra intersection at Boundary Rd was needed to future proof the bypass.

"We will be talking with the Nexus group about how they can become heavily involved in the local community," Cr Antonio said.

"We are very happy with the fact there are four lanes right the way through to the Warrego Hwy; happy that there are overpasses in three occasions with the Warrego Hwy, Toowoomba-Cecil Plains Rd and also with the Gore Hwy.

"Projects Queensland has brought together the opportunity for the best brains in the world to design this project, and that's what we've got."

Cr Taylor said council would advocate with state and federal governments, and Nexus, for the connectivity and take-off at Boundary Rd.

"We believe this is necessary for better connectivity in the industrial areas to the west and improve transport in and around our Toowoomba region," Cr Taylor said.

"We now need to have another take-off of the bypass and we need it to be built while the project is being done.

"We will continue to advocate for that take-off at Boundary Rd to service the western industrial areas that we have out there and future proof this project."

Cr Antonio acknowledged the work of former councils over the past three decades.
