Northern Territory-raised house music legend Dom Dolla has made his Grammy nomination debut after dominating the party playlists for 2023.

The house music sensation has been nominated for Best Remixed Recording for his remix of the Gorillaz’s “New Gold”, using samples from fellow Australian artist Tame Impala and American rapper Bootie Brown.

Dom Dolla, whose real name is Dominic Matheson, moved to Melbourne from Darwin when he was around 14, and after suffering a back injury from a footy game his life switched to music.

“I moved down to Melbourne and started sneaking into clubs, underage and obsessively collecting music, DJing was the natural next step,” Dom Dolla said in an interview with Remix Magazine.

In January, Dom Dolla told the Grammys his nomination for the international music awards was something “I didn’t think it would ever be achievable”.

“My goal when I first started uploading music was to hit 10,000 plays on a song on SoundCloud.”

With 846,000 streams on SoundCloud and 42.5 million plays on Spotify, New Gold has exceeded the early career goal for the now 32-year-old musician.

Aussie artists flying under the radar

Dom Dolla said when the Gorillaz said he could produce their only remix for the album he realised: “it was ultimately up to me not to f — it up, really.”

The Manila-born, Darwin raised artist had a stellar year at home, with three of his tracks making the Triple-J hottest 100.

The Territory house music sensation was also named the GQ Solo Artist of the Year, and won the Best Dance or Electronic Release ARIA award.

When asked what was next, Dom Dolla said: “I actually have no idea what I’m doing. I’m just kind of hanging on for dear life.”

“For me, it’s about building upon that each and every time — giving a better DJ performance, creating a better set and writing better music.”

He will be competing against BADBADNOTGOOD, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, Wet Leg, and Terry Hunter for a Grammy.
