Northern Territory politician Tanzil Rahman has won a spot in the prestigious McKinnon Institute’s Advanced Political Leadership program, a nonpartisan initiative designed to support and strengthen leadership by parliamentarians across Australia.
Country Liberal backbencher Dr Rahman was elected to parliament last year as member for Fong Lim.
He is the only Territorian in this year’s cohort of 21 participants, which includes former federal assistant minister Amanda Stoker, and Western Australia Shadow Finance Minister Tjorn Sibma.
Dr Rahman said the McKinnon scholarship would help build on his leadership and policymaking skills.
“I’m proud to be invited to join this important program. It’s a chance to learn from experienced leaders and peers from across the political spectrum,” he said.
“I look forward to using what I gain through this experience to improve how we serve the people of the Northern Territory.”
McKinnon’s Advanced Political Leadership Program brings together members from federal, state, and territory levels, and is billed at those “who are potential ministers in the short to medium term”.
The 2025 program will be led by Professor Rod Glover, Professor Anne Tiernan, and Arthur Sinodinos AO, and runs for nine days between June 12 and September 20.
Dr Rahman will receive a $32,000 scholarship covering the costs of tuition, meals, and accommodation at three workshops through the year.
One of Dr Rahman’s constituents, historian Peter Forrest, said he was pleased to see his involvement in the leadership program.
“Tanzil is a highly educated person, but also a man who has never denied his roots in the Territory community,” Dr Forrest said.
“I applaud this opportunity created by the McKinnon Institute to sponsor Tanzil’s specialised further education because it has the potential, through him, to significantly enhance decision making and government in the Northern Territory.”
