A NEW television series will shine a light on the inspirational stories coming from Toowoomba's South Sudanese community.

Comedian and television presenter Michael Hing said viewers of his SBS documentary series Where Are You Really From? would meet people who had overcome incredible hardships.

"I was really heartened by the stories of the Sudanese community, being embraced by Toowoomba," he said.

"I found their stories really compelling and fascinating."

Mr Hing travelled to Toowoomba last year as part of the three-part series, which premiered earlier this month.

Where Are You Really From? looks at how generations of migrants have made their homes in Australia, while having to confront negative stereotypes.

"Growing up, people were always asking me where I was from, but often what they're asking is what is my cultural background," Mr Hing said.

"As soon as I spoke to anyone...being asked that question, everyone had stories to tell. Everyone got that question all the time."

The final episode of the series, which focuses on Toowoomba, airs on Friday, June 22 at 7.30pm.
