Why city residents turned their noses up at development prospect

Developers are circling an enormous block of land in Toowoomba rife with opportunity for development, but the residents are not impressed. Here’s why.

A massive chunk of land in the growth of area of Meringandan West has earned the interest of several developers after it was listed for sale through LJ Hooker.

City residents have not held back in showing their disdain for development projects around Glenvale after The Chronicle revealed this week local developers, and businesses from Brisbane were eye-ing off land just outside the city.

Developers have been circling an 18-hecatre block on Goombungee-Meringandan Road since it was listed by LJ Hooker Commercial, that could be turned into 200 new lots.

But the residents are not impressed.

Locals took to social media to question whether the city really needs any new developments.

“I don’t understand why they are trying to squeeze so many houses/units into a small area,” Richie Collins said.

“No room for a shed even let alone room for an outside pet.”

Rober LaBrie questioned the transformation of farmland into commercial lots.

“I dread the day all good farmland has been developed into ‘people farms’,” he said.

“What will we eat then? Soylent Green?”

Tegan Ashleigh Grace said, as a prospective tenant, the market was tight but units were not the answer to the city’s rental woes.

“Coming from someone who not long moved trying to find a rental is an absolute nightmare,” she said.

“Five months of searching before getting somewhere.

“30 people turned up to view just one property that I viewed.

“People from NSW and Vic are moving to Toowoomba – the problem being heaps of units but not enough houses.

“A family of four or five can’t possibly live in a tiny unit.

“I struggled as a single mum with two kids in a unit because of the small size.

“We really don’t need more units otherwise prioritise houses to larger families instead.”

The expressions of interest campaign for the land ends on March 12, so for more information call Mike Stewart on 0418 717 361.
